beaumont house
Montreal, Quebec
2011
Maison Beaumont is above all an experimental project that emphasizes the experience of space. The discreet building is located in a Montreal neighborhood with residential and industrial uses of heterogeneous formal typologies. Unlike Montreal duplexes of stacked housing, the Beaumont house is distinguished by its square modular composition. This structures the 2 housing units of the project. On the ground floor and 2nd floor for the first and on the 2nd and 3rd floor for the second. This feat corresponds to the desire to create units which face three orientations rather than two, taking advantage of the light of the South.
The most particular element of the building is the composition of the exterior walls. Built in exposed concrete, a layer of insulation is inserted between the interior and exterior walls. Natural materials frame spaces filled with natural light. The hardness of the concrete contrasts with the worked walnut. The materials are uniform and disciplined architecture is found throughout. Also highlighted are cedar ceilings and concrete floors, as well as secondary features such as walnut furniture and granite countertops.
